Under general supervision, lead, and conduct activities in the delivery of recreation program areas including camps, preschool, tots, after school programs, parks and nature, teens, boxing, youth and adult sports, special events, and active adults; oversee the proper use of indoor and outdoor community recreational facilities, perform a variety of custodial tasks; assist the public and staff in their use of the facility.

 

Distinguishing Characteristics: 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Aide assists in the proper use of a community recreational facility and assist Recreation Leaders in providing a variety of recreation programs. The Recreation Leader classification is distinguished from the Recreation Aide level in the complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, the amount of time spent performing the duties, the nature of the public contact made, and its training responsibilities of new staff. Positions at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility.

Recreation Leader - $16.61-$20.19/hourly

Day Camp & Sports Camp Leader: Energetic, creative, and responsible leader to work with children ages 3-12 at Summer Camp programs, childcare and other youth activity programs.  The leader is responsible for planning and implementing daily sports, games, arts-n-crafts, drama, songs, science, and nature activities. Leaders may also chaperon participants on field trips and engage with physically active activities such as swimming.

Teen Leader: Energetic, creative, and responsible leaders are needed to work with teens ages 12-16 years at Teen Camp, Teen Center Programs, and the Teen Workshop. Leaders are responsible for creating, engaging, and providing an inclusive environment. In addition to planning and implementing daily games, sports, arts-n-crafts, and teen appropriate activities to empower teens to explore their interests and develop valuable skills.  Leaders will also chaperone participants on occasional field trips and swimming.

Bike Workshop Technician: Staff areresponsible for fixing, maintaining, and selling bikes and assisting in running the bike workshop. Setting up and take down of the bike workshop, includes performing basic bike repair on a variety of bikes, maintaining inventory and accounting records of bikes and parts, providing customer service with effective communication. Lastly, assisting the CRS Project Specialist with basic cash handling duties and special events supporting the workshop.

 

Fitness Attendant: Seeking individuals to greet and assist members and visitors of the Mark Green Sports Center. Staff who can provide high levels of customer service; guide fitness tours; set-up, take down and clean-up of classes; issue and collect equipment; provide basic operational instruction of fitness equipment; monitor safety; maintain accurate records; complete daily cleaning and sanitizing duties.

 

Building Attendant: Staff will oversee community recreational facilities before, during and after activities and enrichment classes. Staff are responsible for providing customer service and opening and closing procedures of building.

 

Facility Rental Reception Leader:  Staff will set up rooms with tables and chairs, communicate and oversee the event while working closely with the rental permittee to ensure the safety of event attendees, equipment, and building. This assignment includes setting up and cleaning community recreational facilities before, during and after activities and fee classes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Possessing a valid California Driver’s License is desirable but not required.
  • CPR/ First Aid certification by their first day of employment (training for certification will be provided by City of Union City upon employment).
  • Scheduled shifts will vary on program, staff must be available to work during the day, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this classification. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Conduct recreation activities; lead recreational activities such as games, arts & crafts, music, and drama.
  • Inspect activity areas and related equipment, make written reports of damage to equipment or facility, and recommend maintenance and repair, as appropriate.
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations; maintain orderly participant conduct.
  • Provide minor first aid to recreation program participants/spectators and/or perform related first aid/emergency techniques.
  • Exercise precautions necessary to ensure the safety of recreation program participants and spectators.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Open and close facilities as scheduled for use; clean up after facility users and set up for subsequent activities; secure the facility upon leaving.
  • Set up furniture or equipment for activities scheduled and see that it is in proper condition and is replaced after use.
  • Sweep and mop floors as required; keep restrooms and kitchen clean and well stocked with paper towels, tissues, etc.; empty trash receptacles throughout the   facility as necessary.
  • Responsible for monitoring adherence to building rules and event limitations. Maintain records and complete written program plans and reports.
  • When work assignments are in the public area of assigned facility, greet visitors, collect fees, have visitors sign guest book.
  • Provide facilities and exhibit orientations and/or tours including appropriate tour materials.
  • Develop weekly lesson plans, plan and direct lessons, games, crafts, and songs for after school and pre-school programs.
  • Function as supervising attendant for evening rentals and weekday evening shifts, as necessary.
  • Train and oversee activities of part-time staff, as assigned.
  • Develop and implement effective program curriculum/content, plan, and schedule activities. Organize people, supplies, equipment, and facilities.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Express ideas and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Exercise courtesy and tact in dealing with recreation program participants and spectators. Deal with difficult or stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Learn tour and exhibit content; provide tours to diverse audiences.
  • Do heavy physical work including the lifting and moving of tables and chairs; perform routine maintenance tasks.
  • Basic bike maintenance is desirable.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities are qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 
Education: Must haveequivalent to completion of one year of high school. Some college level course work in recreation, early childhood education, leisure services, or a related field are desirable.

 
Experience: A minimum of one-year experience performing duties like that of a Recreation Aide.

 
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: 

  • Work Permit, as applicable.
  • Any offer of employment to an adult who will have direct contact with minors is conditional upon submission of completed fingerprint screening, a satisfactory background check, and a valid Tuberculosis (TB) result.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR is required (within 30 days of start date).
  • This classification is designated as a Mandatory Reporter; Completion of Mandated Reporter training is required within one month of employment.
