Position Details: The Department of Microbiology and Pathology (VMP) within the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Dr. Troy Bankhead's laboratory. The incumbent will conduct basic and applied on an NIH-funded project involving the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. Primary responsibilities include experimental work on the mechanisms of gene regulation and host-pathogen interactions. Other responsibilities include analysis of data, maintenance of accurate research records, review of current literature, preparation of manuscripts, and presentation of research findings at national and international meetings. The incumbent will also be expected at times to train graduate students in basic research techniques in molecular biology, microbial genetics, and murine infection. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop and implement new ideas on the project involving the spirochete pathogen. The appointee will be part of a strong interdisciplinary group of investigators engaged in research to control diseases of international importance. This research will also offer opportunities for collaborative projects with research scientists of the USDA-ARS, Animal Disease Research Unit, housed within the department.
The successful applicant will join a dedicated team focused on research, service and scholarship. This position is located in Pullman, Washington.
Summary of Duties: - Presenting the research through poster/oral presentation and peer-reviewed publication.
- Designing, carrying out, and troubleshooting experiments.
- Coordinate, manage, and maintain daily lab operations.
- Oversee quality control, make suggestions for improvement in techniques and interpretation.
- Supervise and train undergraduate and graduate trainees.
Required Qualifications: - Ph.D. in Biomedical Science, Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology or a related field.
- Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written.
- A first-author publication in peer-reviewed journal.
- Demonstrated previous experience in areas such as microbiology, molecular biology, and microbial genetics.
Preferred Qualifications: - Specific expertise in bacterial pathogenesis, RNA work, mouse models of infection, and immunology is preferred but not required.

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

This is a temporary, non-tenure track position. Temporary End Date: This is a temporary position expected to end on October 31, 2025. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
