Job Description

Founded in 1970, the Africana and Latinx Studies Department (ALS) integrates and maintains the intersections of Black and Latinx Studies. We have remained steadfast in our concern for justice and community, upon which the fields were founded. The ALS department at the State University of New York at Oneonta invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Black/Africana/African American Studies beginning Fall 2025. 

Faculty standardly teach up to 21 credit hours a year.  Departmental research reflects issues facing people of color nationally and on a global scale. Concerns include liberty, poverty, environmental racism, policing, surveillance, gender, violence, access such as to education, and more.  

The ALS program incorporates new scholarship including from critical race studies, social theory, cultural studies, gender-sexuality studies, borderlands, and political economy into its courses. We offer a Major - Africana and Latinx Studies; and three Minors - Africana and Latinx Studies, Urban Studies, and Social Justice. Our resources include the Ralph Watkins Hub for Social Justice which hosts the Choonoo and O'Mara Library Collections, and a newly launched Watkins Research and Leadership Program. Our teacher-scholars practice what they teach and research. We examine and advocate alongside communities and individuals whose organizing, resistance, and resolve have contributed to social justice. Our engagements include projects on-and-off campus, local and global initiatives such as refugee & asylum assistance, consultancy with democracy & governance organizations, the union movement, LGBTQ advocacy, immigrant rights, peace work, class, and sex-gender advancement. 

The department has a strong history of excellence in teaching, service - including faculty-student mentoring, and continued contact with alumni. Students take courses at the upper-division level in the department out of keen interest that is nurtured by departmental pedagogy and practice. More than half in each class are non-majors. Duties associated with this position include  

  • Teaching foundational and intermediate courses in Africana and Latinx Studies (Black and Latinx Experience; Race, Class, Gender, and Culture - both classes fulfill General Education requirements). 
  • Contribution to First Year Dragon Academy Liberal Arts Seminar.  
  • Instruction in upper-level courses in Candidate's specialization.  
  • Joining in ALS departmental collaborations.  
  • Participating in ALS activities for example in the Ralph Watkins Hub for Social Justice.  
  • Candidates who apply and qualify for consideration as Associate Professors are eligible to serve as Department Chair as of their second year 

Salary: Assistant Professor : $60,000-$63,000.  

Associate Professor : $70,000-$75,000.

Required Qualifications:  

  • Earned doctorate in Black Studies/Africana Studies/African American Studies/Latinx Studies or other Interdisciplinary Program such as Race and/or Ethnic Studies (ABD considered; completion required by date of appointment) 
  • Teaching experience 

Primary Specialization : Interest in one or more of the following: Freedom Trail Histories, Emancipation Studies, Race and Ethnicity in Medicine and Health Care, Race and Ethnicity in Ecologies and Environment, and/or Queer Studies 

Secondary Specialization : Interests in one or more of the following: Labor Studies, Religion and Liberation Theologies, Food Studies, Urban Studies, and/or Rural-Urban Migrations  

Preferred:  

  • Research and publication interests centered on the histories and experiences of Africana Communities in the United States that uses critical scholarship on race, gender, culture, and class.  
  • Commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring.  
  • Experience working with diverse populations and/or teaching pedagogies and/or inclusive multicultural teaching experience.  
  • A willingness to collaborate and contribute to new and ongoing work in our Ralph Watkins Social Justice Hub.
